Steve Coogan and firms sued over Richard III film
It has been reported that actor Steve Coogan and several production companies are facing a lawsuit over their film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Richard III.
The lawsuit, filed by a group of historians and Shakespeare scholars, alleges that the film takes too many liberties with historical accuracy and misrepresents key events and characters from the play.
Coogan, who plays the title role in the film, has defended the project as a creative interpretation of the classic play. However, the plaintiffs argue that such artistic license does not extend to distorting the facts of history.
The lawsuit is seeking damages for defamation and copyright infringement, as well as a public apology and disclaimer attached to the film acknowledging its fictionalized elements.
Coogan and the production companies have yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit. The case is expected to go to trial later this year.
