Regulator sorry for past disciplining of gay doctors
The Medical Board of Australia has issued a formal apology for its past disciplinary actions against gay doctors.
In a statement released on Friday, the board acknowledged that in the past, some doctors had been unfairly targeted and disciplined because of their sexual orientation.
“We deeply regret the harm that was caused to these individuals and the pain and suffering they endured as a result of our actions,” the statement read.
The board also announced a series of initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the medical profession, including training programs on LGBTQ+ issues and creating a support network for LGBTQ+ doctors.
“We are committed to ensuring that all doctors, regardless of their sexual orientation, feel safe and supported in their practice,” the statement concluded.
